Essential oils don't always have the best rep—but a new study shows a pair of them may actually benefit your health.

Over one-third of Americans have elevated cholesterol levels, putting millions at risk for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack, stroke, and high blood pressure. High cholesterol levels, otherwise known as hypercholesterolemia, can typically be traced back to a poor diet and lack of exercise, and is often treated with statins or other cholesterol-lowering drugs.

While many find success using statins, these drugs have also earned a reputation for long-term side effects such as liver damage and memory loss. But a team of researchers in Saudi Arabia may have found a natural counterpoint to cholesterol-lowering medications.

A 2017 study, published in the peer-reviewed African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines, found ginger and rosemary oils to be potential option for natural hypercholesterolemia remedies. Jamie Vespa, MS, RD, has previously highlighted ginger's medicinal properties as an anti-inflammatory agent, a digestive aid, and a nausea aid, among others, for Cooking Light. And there is more peer-reviewed research on rosemary's anti-inflammatory effects and antioxidant properties.

Researchers tested the effects of ginger and rosemary oils administered, both independently and together, on the cholesterol levels of female rats fed a high-fat diet. Other factors were also considered to determine the potential cholesterol-lowering properties of the oils.

After six weeks of the high-fat diet, which also led to high cholesterol levels in the subjects, researchers saw the rats’ weights more than double, on average. But another six weeks of treatment complete with oral administration of ginger, rosemary, and a mixture of the oils, researchers reported weight loss in all groups, even while still administering high-fat diets.

Triglyceride and glucose levels, factors that also play a role in hypercholesterolemia, were also noticeably reduced. The researchers found that the oils neutralized the cholesterol-raising effects of a high-fat diet and also helped preserve the structure of the liver.

More research is needed in order for health professionals to recommend these natural remedies as a method to manage cholesterol levels. But safely incorporating ginger and rosemary oil supplements into your routine may be beneficial to those who are struggling to keep cholesterol levels in check.

9 essential oils for diabetes

Diabetes affects the way that the body produces and uses insulin, and it can lead to various symptoms and complications. Some believe that aromatherapy, or treatment with essential oils, may help.

Read on to learn more about which oils may benefit people with diabetes, how to use them, and what precautions to take.

Essential oils are concentrated versions of certain compounds in plant matter.

A person can easily find an essential oil in the peel of a citrus fruit. Peeling an orange, for example, releases the essential oil, spreading the scent of fresh oranges.

Aromatherapy involves inhaling or otherwise absorbing compounds from these oils for medicinal purposes.

The body can readily use many of these compounds. Since ancient times, people have used essential oils in various ways, and some of their compounds have formed the basis of several Western medications.

The following essential oils may help reduce the effects of diabetes.

Share on Pinterest Coriander seed essential may help lower blood sugar levels.

Coriander — or cilantro — seed grows all over the world. In many traditions, coriander seed is a remedy for digestive issues, such as indigestion, diarrhea, and flatulence.

Coriander seed essential oil may also help in the fight against diabetes. In a study from 2009, scientists found that an extract from coriander seed reduced blood sugar levels in rats with diabetes.

The researchers noted that the beta cells in the pancreas were more active after using coriander seed oil. This may help increase insulin levels and reduce blood sugar.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) essential oil may help people with high blood sugar levels, according to a study published in 2015. Researchers found that the essential oil of lemon balm helped encourage cells to consume glucose.

The team carried out the test in a lab, not with humans, but it suggests that the oil may be beneficial for blood sugar levels when a person uses it in a diffuser or applies it to the skin.

In an animal-based study, researchers found that clove bud essential oil could play a role in preventing or managing type 2 diabetes.

The team discovered that the oil reduced levels of enzymes in the pancreas in a way that may combat diabetes.

Also, they noted that clove bud essential oil might specifically help manage or prevent features of diabetes that result from oxidative stress.

This occurs when the body does not produce enough antioxidants to battle free radicals, which are unstable molecules that damage cells throughout the body.

People have used black seed, or Nigella sativa, in traditional medicine to treat many conditions, including diabetes.

Scientists tested the effects of Nigella sativa seed and its essential oil on diabetes in a rat model and reported their findings in 2014.

They concluded that both the seed and essential oil could be useful treatments for high blood sugar and the issues that come with it.

The researchers also found that Nigella sativa is rich in antioxidants that may help reduce the risk of diabetes complications that result from oxidative stress.

Using black seed essential oil, alongside a varied and healthful diet, may help reduce blood sugar to safe levels.

People with type 2 diabetes often have high blood pressure and circulatory problems.

A 2013 study found that essential oil from a common kitchen spice, black pepper, might help manage or prevent type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

The researchers noted that the oil contains a lot of antioxidants and that it may help block certain enzymes that may contribute to diabetes and high blood pressure.

Weight management is a key factor in controlling type 2 diabetes symptoms. While being overweight does not cause every case of diabetes, it can increase the risk or make symptoms worse.

Losing weight is a first-line treatment for many people with diabetes. This involves exercise and changes to the diet, but essential oils may help.

According to a study published in 2015, when rats with obesity consumed extracts of either Helichrysum or grapefruit as supplements, they gained less weight and had fewer signs of inflammation and less excess insulin than rats who did not consume any supplements.

Future research may show that both Helichrysum and grapefruit can help people lose weight if they use these extracts properly.

For example, after a workout, a massage with a base oil that contains Helichrysum or grapefruit essential oils may help promote relaxation and weight loss.

Cinnamon is a popular spice in desserts and other aromatic dishes. Its flavor seems to boost sweetness without adding more sugar.

Also, research suggests that it may help people with diabetes. Before publishing their findings in 2010, scientists determined that cinnamon may benefit insulin sensitivity, sugar and fat levels, inflammation, blood pressure, and even body weight.

Regularly consuming cinnamon and using the essential oil may help control some features of diabetes in some people.

Lavender essential oil has numerous uses in traditional and Western medicine, and according to research published in 2013, it may help relieve diabetes symptoms.

Researchers found that in animal experiments, lavender essential oil helped balance high blood sugar levels and protect against oxidative stress, which causes complications in people with diabetes.

Diabetes is a complex disease that may respond to aromatherapy, which is the practice of using essential oils as treatment. However, it may not help or be safe for everyone.

There are various forms of aromatherapy, but it is always important to follow directions carefully to avoid any adverse effects.

Inhaling and applying to the skin are the two main ways of using oils. receptors in the nose and capillaries of the lungs pick up the particles of many essential oils and carry them into the bloodstream.

  • In a diffuser: Add a few drops of essential oil to an aromatherapy diffuser and take long, deep breaths of the vapor. The aim is to allow beneficial compounds to enter the body. A diffuser spreads the particles of oil through the air.
  • Inhaled directly: Float a few drops of oil on some hot water to make an individualized diffuser.
  • On a piece of cotton: Put a few drops on a piece of cotton or tissue and inhale.
  • Diluted on the skin or in a massage: Some particles may be small enough to pass through the skin, where they may enter the bloodstream or provide localized treatment. Always dilute an essential oil in a carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil.

As part of a massage, oils can also help a person relax, reducing stress levels.

People can also apply diluted essential oils to bath salts, lotions, or wound dressings.

Not all oils are healthful for everyone, whether in a diffuser or on the skin.

For example, some oils can irritate the lungs and be dangerous for people with breathing problems, such as asthma.

Below are some health considerations for different methods of aromatherapy:

In a diffuser

People with asthma should not use essential oils, as they can cause irritation and trigger potentially life-threatening symptoms. Anyone who experiences breathing problems when using essential oils should stop using them at once.

Pregnant women, children, and pets may also experience adverse reactions, and a person should consider them before using a diffuser.

On the skin

It is crucial to dilute an essential oil, by mixing it with a carrier oil, before using it on the skin. For example, add a few drops of essential oil to 1 ounce of olive oil, coconut oil, or almond oil.

Allergies

Before using a diluted essential oil mixture, try applying a dime-sized amount to the forearm to check for allergies. If no indications of allergies appear after 24–48 hours, it should be safe to use the diluted oil.

Hormonal impact

In 2018, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences noted that some essential oils, including lavender, contain substances that may disrupt hormonal activity when people apply them to the skin. This may lead to the unwanted growth of breast tissue in prepubescent males.

Never swallow an essential oil, as many are toxic.

Essential oils may help people with diabetes as an accompaniment to their regular treatment. However, research has not yet confirmed that any essential oil effectively treats diabetes, and some uses may not be safe.

People who use these oils should do so in addition to their regular treatment and consider the precautions mentioned above.

It is best to speak to a doctor before using essential oils, and a person should not use them on or around children without first seeking medical advice.

When a person uses them safely, essential oils may help combat diabetes, including its symptoms and side effects.

Regardless of a person’s treatment plan, it is important to learn as much as possible about the disease, as this can improve outcomes and lead to a better quality of life.

The Facts on Omega-3 Fats

When it comes to good-for-you fat, seafood stands out. Seafood harbors omega-3 fats called DHA (docosahexanoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentanoic acid), unsaturated fats considered central to a child's brain development and eyesight, and for heart health.

Continued

Omega-3 fats are linked to lower levels of blood triglycerides (fats), reduced risk of clots that block the flow of blood to the heart and brain, and a normal heart beat, among other benefits.

Seafood contains preformed omega-3 fats, the type the body prefers. Adults and children can make DHA and EPA from the essential fat alpha-linolenic acid, found in foods such as walnuts and flax, but experts say less than 10% is actually converted. Fatty, cold-water fish, such as salmon, sardines, and tuna are rich in preformed omega-3s.

I hope my reviews and comparisons have helped you see the differences between essential oil companies. Have you made your choice of essential oil brand to start buying from?

  • My personal test winner for overall best essential oil brand, is Plant Therapy essential oils. They offer great value for your money, especially if you&rsquore just getting started. You can get a kit of 10 oils for around $50! This almost begs for you to try essential oils.
  • If you&rsquore looking to explore a fun, new brand that is keeping up with the more established competitors, have a look at REVIVE essential oils. Their oils are great quality, fairly priced, and ship quickly. Anyone switching over from an MLM like Young Living or doTERRA will find their blend comparison chart super useful.
  • Third, if you have a bit of a higher budget range, I also quite like Rocky Mountain Essential Oils. They are a bit more money than Plant Therapy and REVIVE, but their quality is outstanding and never disappoints. I think you&rsquoll especially enjoy the blends, and their USDA Certified Organic oils are fantastic!
  • Fourth, I do also like Eden&rsquos Garden essential oils as they have great starter kits that are easy to use, and the oils included are useful. EG prices are fair, which is always appreciated. Their blends are unique and well-loved. would be my fifth favorite just because of their full-on commitment to all things organic. I really like their company culture, and like to support a great bunch of people! You can find a plethora of oils in their line-up: anything you may want or need, they&rsquoll have it in stock.

Bergamot for Cholesterol

Bergamot is known for its uplifting citrus scent and antiseptic properties. Now bergamot may have a role in managing cholesterol and blood glucose levels.

Bergamot's Versatility

Bergamot is the common name of the citrus bergamia risso plant. The fruit has a yellow skin and is the size of an orange. Although native to sout-east Asia, 80% of the world's bergamot is produced in Calabria, southern Italy where it grows extensively. If you've never heard of bergamot you've probably been exposed to it. The oil from the peel is used to flavour Early Grey tea and 50% of women's perfumes contain bergamot. Aromatherapists use bergamot oil to treat:

Bergamot May Help High Cholesterol

In two separate studies, Italian researchers have found that bergamot can help lower cholesterol levels. In the most recent study researchers studied 82 people &ndash who each had a total cholesterol and triglyceride level of 250 or higher (levels higher than 240 are generally regarded as dangerous). The participants' diet and other medications were modified for the trial. Each participant took one or two doses of 500mg of citrus bergamot polyphenolic extract for 30 days. The results showed a significant decrease in bad cholesterol, triglycerides and blood glucose levels. The results were:

  • 42% increase in HDL (good cholesterol)
  • 38% decrease in LDL (bad cholesterol)
  • 41% decrease in triglycerides
  • up to 25% decrease in blood glucose

Lead researcher, Dr Vincenzo Mollace, professor аt thе Faculty &omicronf Pharmacy, University "Magna Graecia", Catanzaro, Italy wаѕ encouraged bу thе result. "In јuѕt four weeks, wе saw a significant reduction іn total cholesterol, LDL аnd triglycerides аm&omicronng patients wh&omicron hаd elevated cholesterol levels аnd a high risk f&omicronr CVD (cardio vascular disease). In addition, wе аrе seeing significant increase іn HDL, thе g&omicron&omicrond cholesterol аnd а reduction іn blood glucose."

Why is High Cholesterol Dangerous?

Cholesterol is a natural product of the liver and in the right amounts does not pose a problem to the body. Sometimes, however, the body produces too much cholesterol, making us susceptible to cardiovascular disease and heart attack.

How Does Bergamot Work?

Bergamot is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from oxidation and free-radicals. The researchers found the cardiovascular benefits of bergamot stem from its unique combination and high concentration of flavanoids that include naringin, neoeriocitrin and neohesperidin. These compounds work by blocking a key enzyme in the production of cholesterol (just like conventional statin medications). Unlike statins, which can have severe side effects, the study showed no significant side effects from taking bergamot. However, bergamot can interfere with other medications. Talk to you health practitioner before taking bergamot.

Bergamot Benefits Blood Glucose Too

It's not just people with high cholesterol who may benefit from bergamot. People at risk of diabetes, such as those with prediabetes and metabolic syndrome, may benefit as bergamot has been shown to lower blood glucose levels by between 15-25%.

Where To Buy Bergamot

Citrus Bergamot Polyphenolic Extract capsules are sold at selected health food stores, pharmacies and online. Although bergamot capsules are derived from the same plant as bergamot oil they are not interchangeable. Bergamot may be beneficial to you if you suffer from high cholesterol, insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome. Always talk to your healthcare practitioner before starting any new medication or herbal supplement.
